Angel Cabrera wins the 2009 Masters

Argentine golfer Angel Cabrera (54), who served time in prison for committing violence against women, reflected on his past and expressed his intention to make a comeback.

Cabrera created a sensation by winning two major golf tournaments, the 2007 US Open and the 2009 Masters. He showed off his health at the 2013 Masters, although he lost in a close overtime match with Adam Scott (Australia).

However, Cabrera, who was found guilty of assaulting his female partner in 2021, was released last August after spending two years in prison.

In an interview in the latest issue of golf magazine Golf Digest, Cabrera said, "I made a serious mistake and I am deeply reflecting on it," and added, "I want to recover from my mistake through golf."

Angel Cabrera on trial

Cabrera, who revealed that he is also receiving treatment for alcoholism, emphasized, "Golf is everything to me and I want to continue playing golf."

In fact, Cabrera participated in a golf tournament held in Rosario, Argentina last week and tied for 10th place.

The PGA Tour did not provide a detailed explanation for privacy reasons, but notified Cabrera that the suspension had been lifted.

Cabrera is not eligible to participate in major tournaments due to his absence, but he is eligible to participate in the Masters tournament.

This is because the Masters guarantees lifetime participation to past winners.

The Associated Press reported, "Augusta National Golf Course, which hosts the Masters, did not immediately respond to questions about Cabrera's availability."
